Tamerlane[1] is an alias used by Pious Augustus around 1460 AD in order to construct the Pillar of Flesh. The character is a fictionalized version of the eponymous historical figure.
As the warlord Tamerlane, Pious conquered parts of Persia and enslaved the conquered peoples into constructing the Pillar. Nominally, the Pillar was a testament to Tamerlane's might and deification, but in reality, it was part of the Ancients' plans for dominion over the Earth and was deliberately located at the Forbidden City due to the monsters present.
At some point, he and his soldiers defeated a general, but as Tamerlane was mocking him, he saw through Tamerlane's glamour and recognized Pious within. Impressed, Pious ordered the general to be used as the foundation for the Pillar.
In 1460, the Venician architect Roberto Bianchi was among the captives impressed into service, with Roberto himself forced to survey the foundations of the Pillar to ensure it was ready for construction. When Roberto reported to Tamerlane his discovery of the monsters infesting the worksite, Tamerlane scoffed and informed him that the infestation was the intent of locating the Pillar there, before having the hapless architect thrown into the foundation alongside many other victims.
Presumably, Pious Augustus abandoned the Tamerlane alias after the Pillar was completed, moving on to become Phillipe Augustine.
Trivia[]
- Due to being based on a historical figure, Tamerlane is one of the few aliases Pious uses whose name is not derived from his own.
- During Robert Bianchi's chapter, Tamerlane speaks his historical quote, "I am the Scourge of God, appointed to chastise you, since no one knows the remedy for your iniquity except me. You are wicked, but I am more wicked than you. So be silent!"
