Chapter 1 Intro

Ancient Persia, 26 B.C.

Chapter 1: The Chosen One is the first chapter in Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. In this chapter, the player takes control of Pious.

Story[]

This Chapter begins in 26 B.C. . A man named Pious Agustus is shown speaking to two other Roman soldiers about hunting for an artifact containing magnificent power.

Gameplay[]

Gameplay for this chapter is pretty straightforward and is quite easily a perfect tutorial stage for basic actions and combat controls for what lies ahead. The only enemies encountered are Mantorok Zombies, which are relatively slow and only take away small portions of Health. One should not become too confident however, for there is no recovery in this Chapter.

As the Chapter opens, one should immediately head down and face the first Zombie. Pious must pick up any object available, which primarily consists of 4 color marked rune cubes scattered throughout the building. Once Pious reaches the fourth cube, a bit of puzzle solving is needed to activate all wall-runes to open up the next passageway from the previous room. Pious must prove his worth in continuing forward by smashing a statue to bits. This is yet another perfect tutorial area, for it teaches the player to perform accurate targeting. Only a few more Zombies stand in the way of Pious reaching a button towards the final room.

After all has been cleared and the final room is entered upon, the player must make a choice of their fate for this story's outcome. If the player has completed a previous storyline but not all of them within a saved game carried over, the previously chosen artifacts will no longer be present until all three storylines have been cleared (or a new non-carried over file is being played). This Chapter officially ends with Pious choosing an artifact of the player's choice.

Trivia[]

  • This is the only chapter that is not narrated by Edward Roivas. It is instead narrated by the player character for the chapter, Pious Augustus.
  • This is also the only chapter other than the game's ending(s) that has an ending narration (as during the ending of the chapter, Pious explains that his encounter with the artifact granted him extraordinary abilities as the ancient's missionary [which one depending on which artifact the player chose], and ominously warns the reader that if they challenge him, they will surely perish).
  • This is also the only chapter other than the opening/main game with Alexandra Roivas where the player doesn't hunt down a chapter page in the Roivas Mansion to unlock it. The player instead only needs to interact with the Tome of Eternal Darkness to unlock it.
  • Notably, this is the only chapter without the Sanity meter in effect.
