The Defeated General is a character briefly seen in a cutscene shortly after Alexandra Roivas found the Tome of Eternal Darkness's page The Forbidden City. He was named Joseph de Molay in early builds of the game and was intended to be a Tome Bearer.
The Gifted Knight was a Templar who was restrained by the Tamerlane, but saw through his glamour and recognized Pious Augustus within. Impressed, Pious ordered the Gifted Knight to be used as the foundation for the Pillar of Flesh. In one scene, he is shown among three other sacrifices; a woman, a foreigner, and Roberto Bianchi. The Defeated General was the first victim to be seen thrown inside the Pillar of Flesh: he slowly tries to reach out a hand to Tamerlane but is quickly pushed into the pit. He is heard screaming as he falls into eternal darkness.
Development[]
Joseph de Molay was originally intended to have a larger role and appeared alongside Pious Augustus and Alexandra Roivas as a playable Tome Bearer in the 2001 E3 Demo, where he could explore the Forbidden City and Oublié Cathedral. His chapter ended up cut because of the September 11 terrorist attacks[citation needed] and was replaced with that of Karim. According to Denis Dyack, Joseph was made primarily as E3 material, likely to test gameplay.[1]
Trivia[]
- Coincidentally, the word "demo" can be made out within the name Joseph de Molay, which fittingly matches his role as a demonstration character.
