The Black Guardian, (misleading, as none of them are black in colour, though they could mean black as in a severly dangerous evil, like "Black Magic") or greater guardian, is a Guardian of immense size and power. It is summoned to Oublié Cathedral by Pious to guard the dominant Ancients' essences. Of all the Ancient's creatures, the Black Guardian is the most similar to it's master's appearance. The reason that Peter Jacob's and Paul Luther's chapter existed was solely on the reason that these beasts were extremely hungry, and to mark them as a large obstical gaurding the artifact. Oublie had to do everything it could to feed it, involving luring monks to their doom to see the fake Hand of Jude, or taking wounded soldiers to their death as food.

In the end of the chapter of Paul Luther, it is seen that Paul was killed by the Black Guardian, being their firist victim. Chatturgha's and Ulyaoth's Black Guardian both crushed Paul's body (Ulyaoth's stepping on him and Chattur'gha's smashing him with his claw), but it was Xel'lotath's who made his head explode.

Peter Jacob is the one who killed it to get the dominating Ancients' essence.

Xel'lotath's Black Guardian

This Particular Black Guardian is considerably the black sheep of the three. It's body appears to have an outragously skinny body with two sets of arms and no head. Instead, it has the Xel'lotath rune symbol in it's place. The guardian is known to cackle and bellow with laughter uncontrolably within cutscenes, and has a very soft, whispery type of dialoge with an ehco. Instead of crushing or stomping on it's enemies, it preferes to levitate it's victim and cause their head to explode. Although it has not atempted on doing this on Peter on the final phase of their battle, and instead atempted to strike Peter with a massive amount of Magickal engery, undoubtably to pad out for gameplay. As it gets closer to death, the Rune symbol gets closer and closer to the base of where it's shoulders are, to indicated the player how close they are to beating it.

Chattur'gha's Black Guardian

Chattur'gha's Black Guardian is perhaps the most memorable as players simply refer to it as "The Lobster Boss". As its nickname entales, it indeed closely remember a crustacean, with it's exo-skeleton and large pincer-like claws. This one is considered to be the most monstrous, as it occasionally lets out a roar and deep, thundering voice. Its methods of attack that are different from the others are shooting fireballs, shooting it's long tongue out, and smashing its huge claws in atempt to crush the player. It occasionally laughs evilly at the player at attempt of shooting it.

Ulyaoth's Black Gaurdian

Of all the Black Gaurdians, this one is the most bizarre looking out of all three. It's appearence is that of some sort of a strange looking alien. If anything, it's somewhat resembles a spider. It has three long legs which support a small, basic body. Under the body, are thin hook-like appendages that hold some sort of levitating sphere. It's voice sounds calm and intellectual, and uses a high level of vocabulary within it's sentences. Upon near death, the player can notice the floating sphere disappears, and the tint of blue around it's body darkens.
